Dave Morwood wins December Podium 4 Sport Award
The December winner of the Podium 4 Sport monthly award went to David Morwood of Annadale Striders for ‘Masters Athlete of the Month’ in association with the NI Masters Athletic Association.
Northern Ireland’s leading provider of sports equipment, Podium 4 Sport, has a monthly award scheme with governing body Athletics Northern Ireland. The monthly award of an £100 voucher will reward not only those excelling in competition but also volunteers and officials who work endless hours contributing to the sport.
Newtownabbey’s Morwood (Coach Mark Kirk) has had an amazing year and the obvious choice for the award. He started the indoor season in February at the British Masters Indoor Championships and took gold in the 1500m and the 3000m.
He followed this up with the European Masters Indoor Championships in Belgium in March and took a bronze medal in the 3000m in a time of 8.49.24. These results were fantastic considering it was his first season competing in indoor competition. At the British Masters outdoor championships in June he took titles in both the 1500m and the 5000m.
In October Morwood continued his winning year with winning both the Northern Ireland and the Irish trial races for the British and Irish masters cross country event. He ended the year on a high with a silver medal at this prestigious event in Glasgow just beaten off by Peter Matthews of Ireland.
He said: “I've had an enjoyable and successful 2011 season. The British and Irish Cross Country international is always a fiercely competitive race so I was delighted to come away with a silver medal.
There have been many strong performances by Northern Ireland athletes during this cross country season so I feel privileged to be the recipient of this award”.
