Excellent International Performances from NI Athletes

O’Connor, Griggs, Roy, Irwin and Haggard-Kearney had outstanding athletic performances in Europe and the US over the past week.

 

Heptathlete Kate O’Connor, under the guidance of coach Michael O’Connor, kicked off her 2024 season with a second place in the Multistars World Combined Events Tour held in Brescia, Italy. Faced with challenging weather conditions, Kate start off in 6th place after the first day. Her best ever Long Jump in a Combined Event of 6.03m (+1.4) propelled her up the rankings on day two. A formidable 49.28m throw in Javelin further elevated her to second place, while a stellar 2:15.14 finish in the 800m secured her a well-deserved spot on the podium with a total score of 6104 points. This significantly enhances her qualification prospects for both the European Championships in Rome and the Paris Olympic Games.

 

In another notable display, Nick Griggs of CNDR Track Club, coached by Mark Kirk, commenced his season at the Meeting Iberoamericano Huelva in Spain. Competing in the 1500m event, Nick delivered an impressive performance, crossing the finish line in 6th position with a time of 3:37.38. This performance will move him up the qualification standing for the European Championships in Rome and the Paris Olympic Games.

 

Lauren Roy (City of Lisburn), currently pursuing her studies in the United States, showcased her talent in Austin, Texas. Competing in the 100m, she clocked an impressive time of 11.71 (+1.8), marking her second best performance in the 100m.

 

Elsewhere, Hannah Irwin NI 10,000m record holder, under the guidance of James Thie, clinched victory in the Newport 10k with an impressive time of 32:57. Additionally, North Belfast Harrier Emily Haggard-Kearney, under the mentorship of Ronan Kearney, won the Mid Cheshire 5k, clocking an impressive 15:42.
